The museum boasts a significant collection of stuffed exotic animals collected by Major Percy Powell-Cotton on his travels in Africa, and also features artifacts unearthed in and around Birchington by his daughter, Antoinette Powell-Cotton, a keen archaeologist. In the 2011 census, the village had approximately 10,000 residents and around 5,000 households. As a seaside resort, the village’s economy is primarily based around tourism, with a number of hotels, caravan parks and leisure attractions.
