The museum contains a big collection of stuffed exotic animals collected by Major Percy Powell-Cotton on his travels in Africa, and also boasts artifacts unearthed in and around Birchington by his daughter, Antoinette Powell-Cotton, a keen archaeologist. In the 2011 census, the village had 10,000 permanent residents and around 5,000 households.
